One day before Renton firefighters and police responded to a near drowning at .

Upon arrival they found a cold and wet 3-year-old who had fallen into Lake Washington and an upset caregiver who had momentary taken their eye off the boy while watching other children in the playground area.

"Summer is here, and a lot can happen in a very short amount of time," said Renton Fire and Emergency Services Battalion Chief John Lecoq, as a reminder to keep a close eye on children during the upcoming July Fourth holiday.

The toddler fell into the water near the playground area, but was quickly pulled from the lake by a concerned citizen who saw the boy fall in, he said.

The 3-year-old never lost consciousness, he said.

"The reason we have small fires and minor medical attention calls is because the citizens of Renton are paying attention," he said.
