Sam Adams tasting at World of Beer: brews are best shared among friends.
WOB offered a rare tasting of Sam Adams' latest release of 'Utopia,' which retails for approximately $200 per bottle. Don't expect to find it in the store anytime soon; Washington state law prohibits the sale of this beer due to its high alcohol content (30%), according to the Sam Adams' brew blog.
With that said, I've never tasted anything like it and can only describe it as really smooth, whiskey-like (in flavor, but no bite), with a honey aftertaste. Only 15,000 bottles are released every other year. Simply stunning.
And for the remaining brews currently on tap at WOB:
1. Cherry Wheat: refreshing, not sweet (a plus in my book), with a toasty/bread-like finish. I'd order this again.
2. Chocolate Cherry Bock: reminiscent of a flat cherry coke. Sweet, but it still holds its own. I'd be more likely to order this in a schooner than a pint.
3. Double Agent: it's a Lager, it's an IPA - no, it's an IPL. Could have fooled me for a Pale Ale, but it was still good.
4. Grumpy: will leave you anything but, if you enjoy Belgian brews. This one is special in that it's heavy on the cloves and hops.
5. Honey Queen: wow, was this mead mixed with beer? Too sweet for me.
6. New Albion Ale: the Sam Adams' blog calls it 'piney,' I say slightly astringent. Wasn't a huge fan of drinking this as a stand alone beer, but it might pair well with curry or another fatty, spicy dish.
7. Summer Ale: a tried & true, well balanced summer classic. Can't go wrong with this solid beer.
8. Third Voyage: an Imperial IPA done right. Expect generous hops and a deep amber color.
9. Maple Porter: savory desert beer. Not too sweet with nutty notes and a slight maple finish.
10. White Lantern: haven't tasted this quite yet.
