Enjoy a Different View of the Sammamish Slough

The Sammamish Slough stretches 14 miles from Lake Sammamish to the north end of Lake Washington.

The Sammamish Slough is best know for the Sammamish River Trail, a favorite for bikers, runners and walkers. But it's also a perfect channel for a leisurely paddle.

Most recently, I enjoyed a 5-mile float from Redmond to Woodinville for a stop at Red Hook Brewery.

A one-way paddle requires a touch of pre-planning and two cars, but a round-trip excursion is just as easy since the slough’s flow is slower than a snail’s pace.

For the one-way trip, start with two cars (both rigged for kayaks) and drive to the take-out point (in this case, Northshore Athletic Fields 14735 N.E. 145th St.). Leave one car there and drive to the put-in point (Luke McRedmond Landing, 15811 Redmond Way).

Luke McRedmond Landing is a convenient put-in spot because of the steps down to the water, although there are many other starting point options along the slough.

Keep your eyes peeled for blue heron, osprey, ducks, geese, weasels, river otters, and other wildlife. Check out this post by Scott Garside for some great shots of the local wildlife

The take-out in Woodinville is a little less convenient, however. It’s just past the yellow condos on the right side, located underneath the 145th Street overpass. This is when it's good to have Tevas or Aqua Socks because you'll probably get your feet wet or muddy.

The trip takes about 2-2.5 hours if you paddle. Floating will take a bit longer. Load the kayaks in the awaiting car and drive (or walk – parking at the brewery can be tight on a nice day) to Redhook and reward yourself for your efforts!

  • Put In: Luke McRedmond Park in Redmond (behind Hotel Sierra and the Riverpark apartment building), 15811 Redmond Way
  • Take Out: Northshore Athletic Fields in Woodinville, 14735 N.E. 145th St.
  • Paddle Time: Approx. 2-3 hours depending on paddle speed
  • Drive Time: About 15 minutes between Northshore and Luke McRedmond
  • Trip Notes: Wear a hat and sunglasses, bring sunscreen and don't forget to wear a lifejacket. A bottle of water will come in handy, too.
