Renton Wrestlers Hoping To Pin Down The Season

Offseason training is the secret weapon for for Renton wrestlers.

Hazen wrestlers look to set another school record this year after sending
eight wrestlers to the Mat Classic last year. Three state qualifiers return
this year including Zach Moore, Derek Nichols, and Josh Kluth.

Other returners include Cameron Felt, Jeremy Hazlett, Jimmy Huynh, and Cole Thatcher. Kentridge transfer Malique Haythorne and a strong freshman class round off the lineup.

Hazen took 2nd place in the Redmond Dual Tournament by going 3-1 on the day with victories over Henry Foss, Redmond, and Federal Way high schools. Their only loss was a 40-39 battle with Kentlake. The final score was actually a tie at 39-39. Hazen lost on the 8th tie breaker criteria.

“We are very excited to watch our team develop into a real wrestling program. Our team has shown constant improvement throughout the last 3 years,” said head coach Rory Munga. “I'm very excited to see what we can do this year. It's always nice to have new athletes to develop into strong wrestlers.”

Lindbergh has two state qualifers returning, Abby Chufar (2nd at Regionals and Seamount league champion in the 124 pound girls division) and Trevonn Russell (2nd in League, 4th in the Region, at the 195 weight class).

Head coach Nick Carlson says keep an eye out for junior Colton Maddy in the 132 pound division (4th in League) “He has been doing a lot of off-season wrestling camps all summer long, and from what I have seen thus far, he shows a lot of potential to make some noise in the league and in the region this year.”

Several Renton wrestlers attended an offseason wrestling camp and are prepared for the upcoming season. Tony Pham, Samuel Nicolas, Abraham Cuevas and Emmanuel Martinez attended the University of Minnesota's J. Robinson wrestling camp during the summer for one week. Khali Crowl attended a 30-day wrestling camp at the University of Minnesota. Pham, Nicolas, Cuevas, and Martinez also participated in daily weight training throughout the summer.

Additional wrestlers Vladimir Kalinin, Alexander Kalinin, Brayan Contreras,
and Abel Rodriguez also participated in Reality sports wrestling club during
the spring and fall to prepare for the upcoming season.

During the offseason Vladimir Kalinin and Abraham Cuevas placed 7th and 8th in the Washington Greco Roman State Championships, Samuel Nicolas Placed 4th in the Washington Freestyle State Championships while Khali Crowl placed 7th in the same event.
