Sumner Upsets Renton Boys 55-53

Indians to play in last chance to 2A Regionals Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against Franklin Pierce.

A late fourth quarter rally wasn't enough for the Renton boys basketball team, which was upset by Sumner, 55-53 in the quarterfinals of the 2A West Central District tournament Friday night at Lakes High School.

Renton was down 42-37 at the end of the third quarter. The Indians took the lead with 1:06 left in the game. Sumner, who lost to Renton in 2A Subdistrict play, Feb 6 (57-52) took back the lead with 29.3 seconds.

Renton (21-2) plays Franklin Pierce (13-10) Saturday afternoon in a winner to 2A Regionals (District 3 #6 seed) and the loser out, 2:30 p.m. at Curtis High School.

A Renton win and the Indians would play at Tumwater High School against District 4 #1 seed (Mark Morris vs River Ridge winner), Saturday February 23, 6 p.m. in the 2A Regional.

Sumner has won 6 of its last 7 games, including beat White River 62-42. Sumner now plays fifth seed Sequim in the semi-finals. White River plays Clover Park in the other semi-final Saturday evening. All four have automatic bids to 2A Regionals.
