Seahawks Skills Camp Offers Advanced Training for Youth

The Seahawks will be hosting their third-annual All-Pro Varsity Skills Camp later this month.

The NFL lockout has cancelled many of the usual off-season events for the Seattle Seahawks, but one tradition has remained during the owners/players dispute: youth camps.

The Seahawks host three different kinds of camps and, later this month, will host their All-Pro Varsity Skills Camp for kids ages 7-12, on June 28-30 at the in Renton.

The All-Pro Varsity Skills Camp has been run for three years and is aimed towards teaching youth that plan on playing football in high school. The camp was created after the Seahawks recognized a need to create a camp for some of the more developed campers that were attending the free Gatorade Junior Training Camp the team has put on for the past 16 years.

"We had kids who were a little more advanced that were assigned to Gatorade camps who were asking for a little more hands-on tutelage as far as offensive and defensive skills...the Gatorade camps weren't really built for that, so after several years of input, we decided to spin off another camp and make it a little more high-end," said Seahawks Community Outreach Coordinator JP Shin.

In past years the camps have been instructed by a combination of Seahawks coaches and players, but due to the current labor dispute, no players will be present, assuming the lockout is still in place at the end of the month. The Seahawks have not yet announced which coaches or other personnel will be present.

The camp lasts for two hours and includes a slew of skills, techniques and drills  that players can use to develop their playing ability. Campers will have the opportunity to break off into different position groups in order to get more specific training.

Cost of the camp is $100 and each camper will receive a "12th man" jersey. Spots are still available, but the camp is filling quickly. Registration ends on the Monday before the camps being.

"Spots are available, but we're trending well in terms of being sold out," Shin said.
