Seahawks Reveal New Uniforms In New York

Last uniform change came in 2002 with the opening of CenturyLink Field.

The last time the Seahawks made significant changes to their uniforms was in 2002, to coincide with the opening of their new stadium. The team's newest look was unveiled Tuesday.

What could possibly bring a player from each of the league’s 32 teams to the Big Apple for a Tuesday event in April that also is scheduled to have NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in attendance?

It’s the event a lot of fans have been waiting for – and yes, some even clamoring for – especially those in Seahawks Nation. With Nike taking over as the supplier to the league, after Reebok’s 10-year deal with the NFL expired over the weekend, the new uniforms for each team will be unveiled Tuesday in New York.

Nike, the league and the individual teams have been clandestine and then some when it comes to keeping the details of just what to expect under wraps. But whenever the innovative, swoosh-driven company from Beaverton, Ore., gets involved you can bet we’re talking about a whole different uni-verse from what the Seahawks have been wearing the past 10 seasons.

Walter Thurmond, a third-year cornerback from the University of Oregon, not only has seen the Seahawks’ new uniforms he wore one of them during a recent sneak preview. He gives the new look – and feel – two raised gloves, and two extended palms, up. Way up.

Thurmond dubs the duds “new age,” adding, “It’s transitioning from where we are as an organization and where the league is going.”

The Seahawks’ new look will first be seen by the public on the 6-foot-3, 232-pound frame of Kam Chancellor. The Pro Bowl strong safety has been selected to model the Seahawks’ uniform at Tuesday’s event.

As for just how much the uniform has been changed and the color scheme tweaked, you’ll have to wait until Tuesday.

But Thurmond knows a thing, or three, about the way Nike does things because he wore their innovative apparel while playing for the Ducks.

“They change the uniforms (at Oregon) every two years, so I got my opportunity to wear a couple different ones,” Thurmond said. “Since we’re at their backdoor, just with the Nike connection, I think (Seahawks chairman) Paul Allen wanted an upgrade as far as the jerseys are concerned. I think the Nike team did a great job.

“With Nike, it’s always going to be something different. It’s not going to be something traditional that everyone is used to seeing.”

Neither Nike nor the NFL ever do anything in a small way, so Tuesday’s event should be worth seeing.
