UPDATE - Seahawks Continue to Build Team Via Draft

Seattle picked Christine Michael (Tailback) and Jordan Hill (Defense tackle) on Friday; Saturday brings 10 total picks.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll appeared confident after he and General Manger John Schneider made their first selection of the 2013 NFL draft Friday evening.

Carroll was seen moments before the selection throwing the pigskin around the war room at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton.

The Seahawks selected Christine Michael a tailback from Texas A&M in the second round and Jordan Hill, a defensive tackle from Penn State in the third.

Carroll defended his pick to the Seattle Media saying "first off we ran the ball more than anybody in the NFL last year so we want this position loaded up. I think the chance to get another good strong tough guy like we did just add to the theme of what we're trying to present as a team."

"We evaluated the guys, and Michael was the best guy coming off of the board," said Carroll. "He is a terrific all-around player at the position."

Michael replaces Leon Washington at a key position.

Hill looks to provide depth on the defensive line. "He'll be right in the rotation. He's different than the guys we have, he has quickness and ability to get on the edge, the backfield and penetrate," said Carroll.

Schneider told the media a short-term need in the draft includes Hill and Michael. "Defensive tackle was definitely a need for us adding depth to the position. That was the one spot that quite honestly when you're putting it together that you're a little nervous that maybe you're pushing players because of a need."

"We couldn't pass on Michael because of where he was on our board and how highly we regarded him," said Schneider.

The Seahawks have 10 draft selections on Saturday, this story will be updated throughout the day with comments from coaches and players.

Original season-ticket holder Lloyd Fields announced the team’s fourth-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft at Radio City Hall in New York City. However ESPN was at commercial break and many didn't get to see it.

“I didn’t know anything about it, until I got a call asking if I would do it,” Fields said before making the trip from his Bellevue home to the Big Apple. “Then I called my son and he said, ‘You’re going to New York.’ ”

Why Fields? “We were looking for an active-duty military person or a veteran,” said Mike Flood, Seahawks vice president of community relations. “And Lloyd is a very special veteran, in commitment to both the service and to the football team.” (Complete story via Seahawks.com)
