Renton's Vo Earns a Win for the Renton Tennis Team

The junior tennis player shined as she held her own on a rebuilding Indians squad.

Renton’s Theresa Vo won her tennis match against Evergreen’s Monica Truong, taking two sets 6-3 and 6-2. Vo made the game-winning swing where Truong could not reach the ball. Vo won the first two games in the second set before Truong would win the third game on a double-fault. But Vo kept the lead during the second set.

“Theresa is a great player,” said Renton Indians Head Coach Allison Ilgenfritz. “She is really strong,”

Truong would start the match by taking the first two games in the first set before Vo would win the next four games. After Truong won her third game, Vo wrapped up the first set by winning the next two games, including the last game where Truong committed three double-faults, helping Vo score 3 of the 4-point advantage.

While Vo appears as the team’s highlight player, 'starting over' is this year’s theme for the Renton Indians tennis squad, as the team rebuilds with a new foundation of young talent. Only featuring two seniors, Ilgenfritz, in her first season as the team’s coach, is focused on building a program that calls for her consistent involvement.

“They do wanna play and get better,” said Ilgenfritz. “There hasn’t been a coach that’s been there to go the extra mile with them.”

Ilgenfritz added that as this is a rebuilding year, it allows the team to try a lot of new things, including different combinations of kids.

Winning a lot of individual matches, Renton has yet to win a team match. The Indians had only three boys playing against the Wolverines, including Bobby Tat and Bao Ling that made the “Boys Doubles,” and A.K. Sterling representing the “Boys Singles.” Other players for the boys were not available for the game.

The Indians will have their next game Wednesday against the Foster Bulldogs at Renton High School, with the game time scheduled at 3:15 p.m.
