Renton Soccer Falls To Tyee

The Indians' offense emerged in the second half but were unable to overcome the Totems.

A second half comeback fell short as the Renton Indians lost to the Tyee Totems 3-2. The Indians (0-4) are still looking for their first win this season while the Totems (2-3 Overall, 1-2 Seamount) earned their first league win.

With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Renton had two scoring opportunities with an onside kick that was deflected by Tyee’s goalkeeper Carlos Reyes, and a direct free kick by Indians’ Christian Plancarte was barely over the goal post. Renton Head Coach Duana Nakamura believed that the Indians could have won the game 4-1 if his team had played correctly.

“This was a game that we missed some opportunities,” said Nakamura. “We missed two critical shots that could have gone in that would have changed the game.”

The Indians’ were down 1-0 going into the second half when Vladimir Hernandez and Sadaq Mohamed each scored a goal. Hernandez scored in the 43rd minute after the team attempted a corner kick, while Mohamed scored on a penalty kick in the 55th minute after Totems’ Reyes was called a penalty for tripping a Renton player. Nakamura encouraged his team to play a more aggressive second half after having a slow start.

“In the second half we wanted to move the ball quicker and create more opportunities,” said Nakamura.

Renton had the game tied 1-1 when in the 52nd minute Tyee’s Felipe Cervantes squeeze a goal by Indians’ goalkeeper Alexiz Quintana, who was unable to keep the ball from passing the goal line. Totems’ Ben Chounlamountry followed with his team's final goal a minute later.

With 14 underclassmen and 6 underclassmen for Renton, Nakamura hopes for his team to move forward each game with more opportunities to score and to finish games.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we were the youngest team in the league,” said Nakamura.
