Renton Prep Sports Round-Up: State Tournament Time

Wrap-ups city-wide for Boys Soccer, Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Track and Field, and Softball.

BASEBALL The Lindbergh boys baseball team mounted a seventh inning rally to tie their 2A Regional game on Sunday against Lynden in Bellingham. Lynden scored three in the top of the 8th to advance 7-4, ending the Eagle’s season. Derrick Holt went 3-for-5 and Taylor Scarvie went 2-for-4 in the loss.

BOYS SOCCER The best Hazen soccer season since 2007 came up short Saturday at Renton Stadium, losing 4-1 to Shorecrest in the first round of the 3A state tournament.  Hazen finishes the season 14-2-4 overall. Hazen head coach Ken Matthews said  “Hazen’s senior class was instrumental in the recent turnaround in Hazen Boys soccer. In the last two years they helped the Highlanders to a 23-8-8 record, two league championships, a 4-0 playoff record, two state berths, and played in a quarterfinal game.”

GIRLS TENNIS Liezel Villaneva of Lindbergh won the 2A girls singles district title with a win over Evergreen’s Cecilia Vu (7-6, 6-4). Villaneva will complete in this weekend’s 2A state tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. She will play Nicole Wesetendorp of Kingston on Friday. Lindbergh’s Jermiah Bayna opens 2A boys singles tournament on Friday against Sehome’s Avery West.  Teammate Joe Kwiatkowski faces Black Hill’s Jimmy Do in first round action at the Nordstorms Tennis Center in Seattle.  (BRACKETS) http://www.wiaa.com/Brackets/T389.pdf

BOYS GOLF
Hazen’s Ethan Morris tees off in the 3A boys state tournament Tuesday at Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield. He begins at 10:57 a.m. Lindbergh’s Drew Blodgett tees off in the 2A boys state tournament Tuesday at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place. He begins at 10:26 a.m. Teammate Nathan Phommavong tees off at 10:37 a.m.  

SOFTBALL Lindbergh girls softball lost its opening 2A District game to Olympic 7-2, ending their season at 16-9. Riley Hill had two RBIs in the fourth inning to tie the game; however Olympic came back with four runs in the sixth for the win.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD Lindbergh’s boys track and field won the 2A West Central District title Saturday at Sumner High School.  The Eagles scored 102.5 points to Olympic’s 89 points. Daniel Karpman (Hazen) placed 3rd in the boys 3A 1600 meters 4:30.29 Mason Jacobs (Hazen) placed 3rd in 3A Long Jump 21-07.25 Mohamud Abdi (Lindbergh) won the 800 meters 1:57.03 and 1600 meters 4:18.79. Jacob Regge (Lindbergh) won the triple jump 43-02.25 feet. Hazen’s 4x400 relay won (names not provided)

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD Renton’s track team placed third overall with Lindbergh’s team placing fourth overall in the team scores. Savannah Smith (Renton) won the 100 meters 25.54 seconds and 200 meters 1:00.84. Emma Tuschhoff (Hazen) placed 3rd in the 3A Triple Jump 34-02.25 Lindbergh’s 4x100 meter relay won Chavauna Kautz, Aajua Brooks, Christina Wiley and Janayla Scott (49.68 seconds). Tala Hild (Renton) won the 2A high jump 5-2 feet. Kaitlin Zinsli (Lindbergh) won the 2A pole vault 11-6 feet. Janayla Scott (Lindbergh) won the 2A girls long and triple jump. She also anchored the 4x100 to a first place.
