Renton, Hazen, Lindbergh Teams Looking To Earn Playoff Spots

Renton boys and girls may secure league's #1 seeds next week.

If you thought March Madness was anything, local high school basketball teams are coming down to the final two weeks of the regular season with each school's boys and girls teams advancing to the subdistricts.

The Renton boys and girls basketball teams have a chance to secure the league's number one seed next Tuesday with wins over Lindbergh. The boys 11-0 league and 17-0 overall are ranked second in the state according to the Associated Press. The team received four first place votes, down from five the prior week. The Renton girls are also undefeated in league play at 11-0, 14-2 overall. They are ranked ninth in the Associated Press poll.

Renton boys head coach Rick Comer tries not to measure the team's success by its ranking, but admits that he does glance at the polls every once and awhile.

"This team isn't looking at who is number one in the state, they are focused on game by game," he said.

The Indians are looking to repeat history made nearly 60 years ago in March when the Indians won the school's first basketball title under Irv Leifer.

Hazen's teams aren't far behind Renton. Both have have qualified for 3A playoffs. The girls are currently 6-5 in league play and 8-9 overall. The boys are  4-7 in league play and 6-11 overall. The Highlanders have Foster, Kennedy Catholic and Tyee remaining.

Last year's fifth place Lindbergh boys are looking to return to the state tournament. The Eagles are 7-4 in league play and 9-8 overall and currently a two seed. The girls are 5-6 in league play and 7-10 overall with a third seed.
