Lindbergh Loses 2-1 In State Playoff Match

Team loses three seniors; future looks bright.

Lindbergh girls soccer coach James Valles entered his second straight state appearance Wednesday night at Renton Stadium. All he wanted his team to do is play 80 minutes of competitive soccer. His team didn’t disappoint, but came up short, losing to Hockinson of Vancouver 2-1.

The Eagles scored in the first minute of the game when senior Elise Alyward crossed a ball to an awaiting Lindsey Pfluger for a 1-0 lead. Defense played a key role until Hockinson scored in the 60th minute to tie the game, then in the 76th minute to take the lead.

“Don’t hang your heads, you got beat by a good team,” said Valles to the team after the game. “We had some good opportunities. Prepare to plan for the next season as the bar rises each year.”

The Eagles lost to Sumner last year in the first round of the state tournament. This is their third straight appearance, second under Valles. They end their season at 13-5.

The three seniors — goalkeeper Audrey Cunningham, Meghan
Hansen and Alyward — addressed the team in the locker room after the game, each thanking their teammates for the season:
