Lindbergh Dominates League Cross Country

Hazen and Renton also advance to sub-districts

The Lindbergh boys and girls cross-country teams took control of the Seamount League Championship Saturday at Evergreen High School. Mohamud Abdi won the boys race and Thuong Nguyen won the girls race.

Nguyen and Highline’s Thais Pedro battled throughout the entire course as Pedro passed Nguyen at the start of the second loop. It wasn’t until 300 meters left that Nguyen began to surge. The two were nearly even as both runners missed the chute to the finish, but Nguyen crossed the line before Pedro. Nguyen finished 21:29.35

“After she (Pedro) passed me, I thought don’t die,” said Nguyen after the race. Nguyen used her sprinting skills to pass Pedro. Nguyen placed sixth last year in the league championship, “I have trained hard after three seniors graduated.”

On the boys’ side, Abdi's plan was not to start out fast, but be fast in the middle and end. His plan worked finishing the course 16:23.64, 36 seconds ahead of Kennedy Catholic’s Nick Dorsett.

“The team is going great, we are peaking (our training) after districts,” said Abdi after the race. Abdi returns to Fort Steilacoom where his personal best of 15:45 was posted at the Fort Steilacoom invite on September 15.

Lindbergh head coach Jef Rettmann was pleased with his team’s performance. “We are consistent, we had a couple runners sick. We are not the same team (boys) from last year’s state championship, but we should place between fourth and sixth.”

Next Saturday is the 2A/3A Subdistrict championships at Fort Steilacoom.
