Highline Makes Its Point Against Hazen Soccer Team

Hazen Highlanders unable to score as Pirates win for a second-place tie in Seamount League.

The Hazen Highlanders had an opportunity to tie with the Kennedy Lancers for wins and to get within one point of first place in the Seamount League. However, the team that stood in the Highlanders’ way was the Highline Pirates (6-4-2 Overall, 5-3-1 Seamount), which pulled away with a 1-0 win to tie with Hazen (5-5-1 Overall, 5-3-1 Seamount) for second place in the league. Highline’s Goalkeeper Pablo Vasquez earned the shutout.

Pirates’ Irvin Lara earned the score in the second half during the 46th minute, as Lara got the ball heading toward the goal before colliding into Highlanders’ Goalkeeper Eddie Timm. Timm, who stepped up to the goalkeeping position for the game, was replaced by Freddie Jeronimo for the remainder of the game. Hazen Head Coach Ken Matthews applauded Timm’s performance before getting banged up.

“Eddie’s normally a field player,” said Matthews. “He volunteered to play it tonight.”

The Highlanders had possession of the ball most of the game, creating more scoring opportunities as Hazen was able to push the ball up-field. Samuel Bunnell had a shot blocked by Vasquez during the 10th minute. Bunnell also tried a slide-shot to the goal but the ball landed in Vasquez’s hands. Frankie Johnson had some scoring opportunities in the second half, with one hitting the side of the goalpost in the 53rd minute.

“We played well enough to win,” said Matthews. “I believe we probably outshot them 7 to 1 and we couldn’t just get anything in the net.”

With only two games left in the regular season, the Highlanders are battling for one of three playoff spots, as seeding is to be determined between Hazen, Kennedy, Highline, and Bremerton, the Olympic League’s only 3A team. Matthews believes a win against either Kennedy or Highline will get the Highlanders in the playoffs.

“We need to beat somebody in these last two games to get into the playoffs,” said Matthews.
