Hazen Soccer Heads Its Way To State

Highlanders won the 3A title in 2007

The Hazen boys soccer team headed its way into the 3A state tournament Saturday after defeating Columbia River 2-1 at Highline Memorial Stadium in Burien. Its the first time since the team won the 3A tournament in 2007 and the schools third time qualifying.

The deadlocked match broke open in the 65th minute when Ryan Wong crossed a ball to the back post where Jalen Conway put a header into the net.   Conway doubled his tally six minutes later when he converted a Luis Puga cross to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.

“The game was a real struggle.  We were a little out of sync in the first half.  But in the last three minutes we got pressure on them so we knew we could do it.  We got back to our passing game more in the second half,” said Hazen head coach Ken Matthews.

Columbia River scored a goal with eight minutes left but Hazen's back three Kyle Bunnell, Conner Hall, and Jordan Valenzona and Keeper Freddy Jeronimo kept Columbia River at bay, giving the Highlanders their state berth.

“We’ve had to improvise back there a little due to players being unavailable.  But the last two games, these four guys have been solid,” said Matthews.

Coach Matthews normally names a Man of the Match.  Today, he awarded Men of the Match to the entire team.

“I’m really happy for this entire group.  Last year didn’t go quite how the guys wanted it and we made so many changes in how we play and do things.  All these guys have stepped their games up.  We can’t get everyone into games right now, but they’re right there during practice and games working, supporting and encouraging,” Matthews ended.

The Highlanders will host second ranked Bainbridge either Tuesday or Wednesday at Renton Memorial Stadium.
