Kennedy Catholic 3, Hazen 0
Playing Kennedy Catholic has always been a tough task for Hazen. Tuesday night proved to be nothing more than another great challenge for the Highlanders as the Lancers won 3-0 to secure the league's number one seed in next week's 3A Subdistricts and an automatic bid to state.
Hazen appeared to come out stronger in the second half playing more aggressive soccer than in the first when they were down 2-0. Hazen had several more shots on goal then the Lancers including getting more players in the box, but the ball continued to miss the back of the net.
Hazen had a goal taken away early in the second half, but the Highlanders were two steps offsides.
The Highlanders' — number two seed in the league — will play either Auburn Mountainview or Peninsula (SPSL #4 seed) on October 31 in a loser-out, winner to state game at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner at 5:30 p.m.
If Hazen wins they will travel to southwest Washington to play Columbia River 8-0-1.
In the first round of the 3A state tournament, Head Coach Ken Mathews told an emotional team after the game "Its not the end of the world."
Hazen still has a league game on Thursday against Highline before the playoffs begin next week.
Mathews added, "We didn't come out strong enough like we did against Lindbergh."
Despite the loss to Kennedy Catholic, the Highlanders are co-champs.
Kennedy Catholic will play Bonney Lake October 31 in the 3A Subdistricts playoff at Highline Stadium. The winner will be the district's number one seed; the loser will be the district's number two seed to the 3A State Soccer Tournament.
