Lindbergh Edges Hazen with Late Free Throws

Eagles win all-Renton clash as Highlanders miss 10 free throws.

Emily Graver made two free throws with 8.2 seconds left in the game and Gabriel Redwine scored 15 points to lead the  girls basketball team past crosstown rival 46-44 on Tuesday night at Lindbergh. The Eagles (6-7 overall, 4-5 Seamount 3A) have won back-to-back games while the Highlanders (8-5, 5-4) have lost two in a row.

After Graver, a junior guard who scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds, made her free throws, Hazen had a chance to tie the score. But senior guard Keyanna Reed missed two free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining, and the Eagles rebounded to win the game.

The Highlanders missed 10 of 15 free-throw attempts.

“We haven’t beat Hazen in a while,” said Lindbergh head coach Allen Dodson. “The ball fell our way.”

Dodson said that, although his team didn’t play well, the bench contributed.

“The bench came off and they picked it up,” said Dodson. “We’re a young team right now.”

Hazen, which was without leading scorer Airashay Rogers, got 19 points from senior guard Michelle Wnek. Sophomore forward Anastasia Pallis added 15.

Highlanders head coach Jeff Bernhardt noted his team's poor performance at the free-throw line, but also praised the effort.

“Disappointing outcome,” said Bernhardt, “but we learned a lot of good things and did a lot good things.”

Bernhardt also said that while his team played short-handed, he was glad to see players like Pallis find her outside shot, along with players such as senior guard Starr Williams and sophomore forward Tyra Markey playing solid defense.

The game was close throughout -- Lindbergh’s biggest lead was 23-15 in the second quarter -- and the score was tied twice in the last 3 minutes of the fourth quarter. Hazen took the lead on a Pallis 3-pointer, but Lindbergh's Dalen Elenzano tied the score with 31.8 seconds left.

“We’re on a mission to get in the playoff”, said Dodson. “We need to win Friday to prove that we deserve to be there.”

On Friday, Lindbergh will host Tyee and Hazen will travel to Highline. Tipoffs for both games are 6:15 p.m.
