Community Spotlight: Lindbergh Cross Country Team

Boys claim first state title in school history.

The following information was provided by Lindbergh Cross Country head coach Jef Rettmann after his boys team won the 2A state cross country championships. Rettmann provided the photos and insight to the championships and looks to next year:

"Very excited to win a state title. This was a goal of our team since last year. I am very proud of how all of our varsity guys committed themselves to getting better and training on the off-season.

They deserved this experience. It is nice to see hard work and commitment pay off. The strength of our team was our pack — we didn’t have a single individual make the top 16 places. Not many teams win state without at least one top runner. This truly was a team effort.

The girls ran great at state. Six of the seven ran either a lifetime personal record or a season personal record at the state meet. As a team this was our best race of the season. This is the 3rd year in a row finishing in the top 6 at state. I am proud of that consistency. Next year will be a bit of a rebuilding year for both the boys and the girls. We are graduating 4 of our top 7 on both teams.

We have a great bunch of guys on our junior varsity now who will be ready to step into the varsity role pretty well. I think our boys should be able to be in the top 4 at state next year. With the girls we have more work to do because we don’t have as much depth. Our girls returning are great kids who work hard.  They will keep getting better. We need to recruit some new girls for sure; however, I think it is a realistic goal for our girls to qualify for state again next year, though we won’t be able to place nearly as well in the state meet."
