PREVIEW: 2A/3A Boys Basketball Sub-Districts

The road to the state tournament begins this week for Renton-area boys basketball teams.

(Note: check back throughout the week for game scores and other sports updates).

The road to the state tournament begins this week for all three boys high school teams, starting with the 2A Sub-District tournament on Wednesday for both Renton and Lindbergh, and Saturday for Hazen.

Renton is coming off its first loss of the season against Kennedy Catholic Friday night in a game that had no meaning as Renton had already secured the league title and number one seed. Many players said Saturday, "it's best to lose now, than lose later."

The 2A Sub-Districts features three of the top 10 schools in the state in Renton, White River and Clover Park.

Renton (13-1, 19-1 overall) will open play on Wednesday against Sumner, a hot shooting team who has won three of its last four games to qualify, including beating White River on Friday 62-42. However, Renton's top-scoring players Jonathan Patterson (14.2 ppg) and Lavelle Smith (13.3 ppg) average more points than Sumner's top scorer Keenan Jackson (12.0 ppg). The Indians should not take Sumner lightly as they know what it takes to knock off a powerhouse team. A win Wednesday means the Indians will most likely play White River for seeding into the 2A West Central District.

Lindbergh (9-5, 11-9 overall) will play Franklin Pierce in what should be an easy game for the Eagles, which have done everything needed in league play to earn their rank. A win means the Eagles could face Clover Park for seeding. The Eagles are looking to return to the SunDome in Yakima after last year's fifth place finish. Lindberg is led by Colin Malone, who is averaging 15.3 points a game.

Hazen (5-9, 7-13) will open 3A Sub-District play on Saturday in a one game winner to district, loser out game against Decatur. The Highlanders have three players scoring in double digits each game: Dominic Green (10.6 ppg), Jordan Coleman (10.4 ppg) and Emmanuel Oppong (10.1 ppg). Hazen should advance with continuous pressure against Decatur.
