Renton Schools To Stay 2A, 3A

Hazen 3A, Renton and Lindbergh remain 2A but stay in Seamount League

The Renton School District has submitted its enrollment numbers to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) as part of its classification adjustments. Renton Schools Athletic Director Brian Kaelin says all three high schools will remain the same with Hazen at 3A, and Renton and Lindbergh at 2A. The schools will still compete in District 3 under the Seamount League as it has for years.

Every two years the WIAA requires its schools to submit enrollment figures to make sure the six classifications are balanced. Classifications are determined by student enrollment - 4A (1304 or more); 3A (1086-1303); 2A (513-1085); 1A (208-512); 2B (93-207); and 1B (1-92).

All three schools have seen greater success based on allocations into state tournaments with half the league split between 2A and 3A.

The remaining Seamount League schools (Evergreen-2A, Tyee-2A, Highline-3A, Foster-2A) are also projected to remain, including Kennedy who opted up to 3A from its 2A enrollment of 736. Opting up is by choice of the school and must be approved by the WIAA.

Classifications will be finalized at January’s WIAA Executive Board meeting.
