Renton Boys Beat Sequim In OT On Lee's Basket

The Indians will face Pullman in the 2A semi-finals at 3:45 p.m. Friday

Renton's senior Zach Lee will never forget how he saved his team's goal of winning a state championship Thursday morning after he grabbed a loose ball in the team's quarterfinal game against Sequim.

The game went into overtime tied at 49. The two teams tied it up again at 56 with 5.4 seconds left to go, and Sequim called a timeout.

But Sequim lost the ball on the inbounds, and Lee then launched a three-point shot as time expired, giving the Indians a 59-56 overtime victory and advancing them to the 2A semi-finals Friday afternoon against Pullman. Lee had 9 points in the game.

Lavelle Smith led all scorers with 17 points; the Indians out-rebounded Sequim 50-27 with Jordan Holland grabbing 10. Other scorers for Renton: James Weatherington with 1 point; Shykiel Milord with 7; Donovan Saario, who fouled out, with 5, Justin Pienh with 6, Jordan Holland with 4 and Jonathan Patterson with 10.

Pullman beat Burlington-Edison in the first game of the tournament 56-36. Pullman had five players in double digits. If Renton looks to compete for the state title Saturday night, they will need to do better than the 32 percent shooting. The Indians need to limit the number of fouls, also, as Pullman shot nearly 70 percent from the line.
