Highlands Elementary Students Named Top Readers In The State

Students log more than 3,200 hours in summer reading challenge

Highlands Elementary School students read more books than any other school in Washington state as part of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. The students logged more than 3,200 hours of summer reading making them top readers in the state and 52 out of the hundreds of thousands of schools that participated in the challenge worldwide.

Β "We know when students read all summer they retain their skills and develop a love of reading that will help them to live better, happier lives," said Highlands Principal Janet Fawcett

The school kicked off the reading challenge before summer break with a book fair where students got a free book with every book purchased. Those books, along with library books and other materials, gave students plenty of resources to use in the challenge. Students logged their reading minutes at the Scholastic Web site throughout the summer.
