Free Heart Screening For High School Students April 4

Only 390 spots remain for free comprehensive heart screening

On Wednesday April 4, students ages 14-24 can receive a free comprehensive heart screening at Hazen High School from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This is the first time Hazen has hosted such an event.

The screenings are offered by the Nick of Time Foundation which brings in doctors and medics to screen students for heart abnormalities. The 30-minute exams normally cost up to about $2,500 per individual; but, through this opportunity, will be provided free.

On average, a seemingly healthy young person suffers a sudden cardiac arrest every three days in the US and it’s the leading cause of death in exercising young athletes. In most cases of sudden cardiac arrest, cardiac abnormalities are not detected, there are no warning signs, and unless a normal heart rhythm is restored within minutes, death is the end result.

The organization will see between 400-500 students who can only receive the screening by appointment, timeslots fill up fast. The screening take about 30 minutes and is free of charge (these exams normally cost around $2,500 for each child).
