Highlands Elementary Walk to School Day

Highlands Elementary in Renton will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 6, 2011.

Students from Highlands Elementary will be walking and riding to school Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 along with parents, teachers and community leaders.

The event will begin at 8 am with kids, parents and community leaders walking from home or the bus stop.  Walkers and bicyclists will arrive at the school at 8 am. Students who walk to school on Oct. 6th will be greeted as they enter the school grounds and receive a button to wear announcing their participation in the walk day.  They will then proceed to the school gym for healthy snacks and information on safety, health and nutrition. There will be a drawing for 4 new bikes, helmets, and small giveaways for students.

Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
