The emergency replacement of concrete panels that are breaking apart has resulted in an emergency closure of three of the five northbound lanes of Interstate 5 around noon today, Wednesday, Oct. 19, according to the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

The emergency closure is expected to remain in effect through 4 a.m. Thursday.

WSDOT predicts the lane closures will likely create widespread traffic congestion for personal vehicles and bus traffic throughout South King County and along the I-405 corridor.

The agency urges drivers to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time until the lanes are re-opened.

During the emergency repairs and lane closures, the northbound I-5 HOV lane in Tukwila will be open to everyone, according to WSDOT.
