The settlement allows Marsalisi to use the remainder of his accrued leave from now until Feb. 29, 2012, the date he will officially ‘retire’ from the City of Renton. Feb. 2012 marks Marsalisi’s 19th year with the City.

Marsalisi’s accrued leave is a combination of “personal, sick, vacation, management and comp leave,” according to the City.

Patch reached Police Chief Kevin Milosevich by phone, but the chief directed all questions to City Communications Director Preeti Shridhar.

In August, Patch spoke with the chief about the department’s struggles with morale, but today Shridhar said morale is positive, noting a recent ceremony honoring seven department members for outstanding service.

“It’s safe to say that folks are feeling good and doing a great job,” she said.

The City has not yet named an acting sergeant to take Marsalisi’s recently vacated position, she said, adding, “No decision has been made and there is no time frame for filling the position.”

Last week Shridhar said scheduled for Nov. 1 at Fire Station 13 and Nov. 2 at Renton City Hall; however, those hearings were cancelled in the wake of the settlement.

Three other department members were disciplined for their involvement in the cartoons, including Officer Bill Judd, who was demoted from the rank of sergeant; Sergeant Steve Ritchie, who received a letter of reprimand; and Tom Smith, who received a verbal letter of reprimand.

Judd is currently appealing the City's decision to deny his grievance.
