Prince, Jones In Close City Council Race; Joos Takes Big Lead For Hospital District

Results should be clearer in the Prince-Jones race as more ballots are counted this week.

Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” played as Renton City Council candidate Ed Prince conferred with campaign manager Barbara Chadwick over the initial release of the 2011 King County General Election results Tuesday night.

Prince garnered 50.52 percent of the vote; his opponent Robin Jones netted 49.07 percent.

“I would rather be ahead than behind,” Prince said. “But I wish I had a little more breathing room.”

“It’s still really close, but I feel like the work we did on the home stretch will keep the votes trending in my favor,” he said, referencing a few challenging moments during the last few weeks of the campaign season.

Current Council member Randy Corman, who also attended Prince’s election night party at the Red House said the results should be clearer by the end of the week when more ballots are counted, and he’s confident in Prince.

“The way he handled himself was just perfect,” he said.

Jones chose to spend a quiet evening and went jogging to de-stress instead of hosting an election night party.

“The results are very close,” he said by phone, adding a big “thank you” to all the people who voted for him.

Jones is confident that the election will not be decided until the end of the week.

Incumbents Don Persson and Greg Taylor both earned a healthy majority percentage of the vote in their respective City Council races.

Renton Schools Superintendent Mary Alice Heuschel gathered with her strategy team at the Fairwood Country Club, but the mood was somber for the Hospital District 1 election results release. Heuschel, who lagged behind her opponent Paul Joos 34.99% to 42.88% in the primary, had only received 41.70% votes as of Tuesday night to Joos' 58.01 percent.
