King Count recently issued its annual list of 'Best Workplaces for Waste Prevention and Recycling.'

Two Renton Businesses were named among King County’s “Best Workplaces for Waste Prevention and Recycling for 2012.”

King County listed the local winners of its sixth annual awards for efforts in waste reduction—

for the implementation of a environmental management system, a “zero waste to landfill initiative,” and an energy management system. The Renton-based company continues to work on reducing waste generation by expanded use of reusable packaging and secondary sorting of production waste.

Several of their global locations have achieved Zero Waste to Landfill; including their Northwestern Distribution Center, located in Renton. In 2011, this location diverted 98.7% of its waste from the landfill. This was achieved through aggressive reuse, recycling and composting programs.

The PACCAR Parts Division Office continues to divert more waste from the landfill through employee education, recycling and an active composting program. The onsite TRP Café, which serves approximately 350 employees, serves all meals in compostable containers. With the assistance of their food service provider, the TRP Café now also offers reusable plates for diners.

“From recycling Styrofoam and cell phones to creating new programs for composting, the innovation these organizations have shown proves that sound environmental practices can go hand-in-hand with a successful business,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine.

The sixth-annual list spans a wide array of businesses in King County, including hospitality, medical services, professional services, retail, finance, government, arts and entertainment and others. The list includes an honor roll for companies that have made the list at least five years in a row.
