Inslee Orders Flags at Half-Mast for Patriots Day

Washington Governor Jay Inslee ordered the flags lowered on Sept. 11, 2013 as part of an annual memorial to the victims of the 2001 tragedy.

Written by Kendall Watson

Governor Inslee has directed all Washington State and United States flags at all state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, for national Patriot Day, the annual memorial to the victims of the 2001 tragedy.

Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Wednesday, or first thing Thursday morning, September 12.

Gov. Inslee can direct state and local authorities to lower the flag in the event a state employee or law enforcement officer or active military services member from Washington is killed in the line of duty, or on the occasion of the death of a principal state or federal official. The Governor can also order flags at half-mast in honor of holidays or commemorative days, such as Peace Officers Memorial Day (May 15—unless that day is also Armed Forces Day), or Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7).

Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition.
