iFly Celebrates One Year Anniversary

Since opening, iFly has hosted Seahawks, Sounders and Mariners players; the Red Bull Airforce parachuting team and pilots; a stunt double for the upcoming movie Iron Man 3 movie; and fliers from ages 3 to 94.

It’s an awesome feeling flying through the air: wind in your face, cheeks flapping, saliva drip-drooling, and then there’s the roar of … fans?

Yes, fans that create wind at speeds of up to 160 mph in the largest vertical wind tunnel west of the Mississippi River. Did I mention iFly Seattle also owns the title, “World’s fastest wind tunnel”?

One year ago this month, iFly Seattle opened just south of Renton. For months during construction it was simply known as “the big red mystery building” visible from I-405 north heading into town.

The first windtunnel of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, iFly affords nearly anyone the opportunity to feel what it's like to skydive. Not only is it cheaper than your average skydiving excursion, you don't have to jump out of an airplane to feel the dare-devil sport's weightless effects.

A lot has happened in its first 12 months in operation, said spokesperson Julie Pinson.

In addition to hosting hundreds of birthday parties, field trips, and get-togethers the facility has offered dozens of skydiving classes, served as a training facility for professional skydiving teams and hosted professional athletes from the Seahawks, Sounders and Mariners teams.

Andy Farrington, the stunt double for the upcoming movie Iron Man 3 movie; world-record-holding skydivers; and the Red Bull Air Force parachuting team have all made use of the facility, she said.

This Sunday, September 23, iFly will mark its first anniversary with an all-day celebration with instructor demos and 25-percent off flights for the first 40 people to RSVP. Miss Washington is also scheduled to make an appearance.
