Getting Back To Normal: Parks Open, Power Restored As Conditions Improve

PSE has restored power to more than 50% of outages in Renton; however, 9,142 customers are still without power as of Saturday morning.

City of Renton Facilities and Program Updates for Saturday, January 21, and Sunday January 22:

Conditions continue to improve. All departments are working to restore normal operations. Temperatures will remain above freezing tonight.

Community Services - Parks, Recreation and Facilities Updates for this Weekend. City officials are monitoring buildings for ice and safety situations as snow melts. Crews are taking care of branches and trees where there is a safety concern.

  • Power has been restored at Maplewood Golf Course. The driving range and restaurant MAY OPEN on Saturday depending on conditions. Please contact the golf course for updates.
  • Gene Coulon Park will open the gates to access Ivar's/Kidd Valley at noon on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.  The rest of the park will remain closed until Monday when safety checks can be done.
  • Most community parks will remain closed until we can evaluate safety issues on Monday.  Philip Arnold Park gate will be open, as long as crews can confirm that it is safe.
  • Cedar River Trail from I-405 south to 131st will remain closed through the weekend.
  • Renton Community Center, open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. No Specialized Recreation programs.  Closed on Sunday.
  • Highlands Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with regular activities on Saturday.  Closed Sunday.
  • Renton History Museum closed Saturday.
  • Renton Senior Activity Center Closed Saturday.

The City of Kent Severe Weather Shelter (SWS) has a cold weather shelter open tonight, Friday, January 20, from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. at the Kent Lutheran Church. While the shelter gives priority to homeless families with children who are living on the streets or in vehicles, it is also available for single women and men. Separate sleeping spaces are available for men, women, and for families with children. The SWS is operated by Catholic Community Services staff and volunteers from Kent Lutheran Church and the greater Kent community. Everyone must register at the door. As with all shelters, rules for the health and safety of clients, staff and the broader community will apply.

Daytime warming shelters will be open on Saturday at Renton Community Center, 1715 SE Maple Valley Hwy, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The city is not providing transportation to the shelter. Individuals should bring their own snacks, beverages, and entertainment materials with them to the shelter. Children must be supervised at all times. Animals, except for service animals, are not permitted in the warming shelters.


Urban Flood Watch:
We are also under a flood watch through Saturday afternoon.  We could see surface runoff with water pooling around clogged drains or culverts and small stream flooding as the snow melts.  No river flooding concerns at this time. Help minimize localized street flooding by clearing storm drains of snow and ice and clearing the gutter line for a few feet each side. If you have a ditch in front of your house, please keep an eye on it.


Power Outages:
There are power outages throughout the Puget Sound region including areas in Renton. Puget Sound Energy predicts many areas will remain out of power through the weekend. They are unable to pinpoint information about which areas will be restored first. Please prepare your home for the coming days.

Road Closures:
Currently there are no road closures.

Traffic Signals:
While most of the city's traffic signals are now operational, some signals may continue to lose power. Traffic laws require that unlighted signals be treated as 4-way stops.

Other Safety Concerns:
There continue to be numerous calls for downed trees and power lines and crews are taking care of these as soon as possible.

As heavy snow melts we are seeing large slabs of ice fall from trees and structures.  Extra caution near overhead dangers is advised.

Public Works crews have been working around the clock to maintain open roads. . Public safety is the first priority during snow and ice removal for the city. Cars that impair the city's ability to make the streets safe and impede snow plows and other snow removal measures may be towed or may get buried under the snow being removed.


Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning:
To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, NEVER use a generator indoors, in garages or carports. Also, NEVER cook or heat inside on a charcoal or gas grill.
