Cedar River Trail Closed From Riverview Park to Maplewood Roadside Park

Bridge repairs are scheduled to wrap up by May 27.

Spring has sprung, but the trail and trestle bridge along the Cedar River may need a few more weeks before full use.

The City's Parks Department has budgeted $170,000 for repairs to the nearly 100-year-old bridge, said Todd Black, capital project coordinator.

The aging bridge is in need of an abutment on the east side, six footing replacements, and 10 new columns, he said.

Every three years BergerABRAM, a Seattle engineering firm, inspects the bridge during a structural review, Black said. This year, the company reported that the bridge was sagging and the footings were failing.

Even though the Cedar River Trail is closed from now through April 28, a detour will direct walkers, bikers and other trail users around the bridge from Riverview Park to Maplewood Roadside Park. They will be re-routed through the park, along the sidewalk next to the Highway, and back to the trail just east of Maplewood. Look for the signs.

The City of Renton and King County have an inter-local agreement, which allows the City to contract with the King County Road Services Division for bridge repairs.

"The King County crew is experienced in it," Black said of the worker's experience with aging trestle-style bridges.

"It's nearly 100 years old," he said of the bridge, which was once a train trestle. Today, pedestrians use the bridge to cross the Cedar River.

The crew will raise the bridge up to six inches, in some places, to replace the wood footings with concrete.

The repairs are scheduled to wrap up by the end of May.
