Update: Missing Snowshoer Identified as Renton Dentist

Mitch Hungate, 61, was caught in an avalanche near Snoqualmie Pass on Saturday.

The 61-year-old snowshoer still missing after the weekend's two avalanches near Snoqualmie Pass has been identified by several media outlets as Mitch Hungate, a Renton dentist.

Hungate, a Kent resident, practiced dentistry on South 43rd Street in Renton's Talbot Hill neighborhood. Officials believe he was buried in an avalanche that took place just before 1 p.m. near the summit of Granite Mountain.

Hungate's two companions were also caught in the avalanche but managed to escape without serious injuries. The search for Hungate was called off on Saturday because of hazardous conditions.Β

The Granite Mountain avalanche was one of two slides that hit the Snoqualmie Pass region on Saturday. A second avalanche took place on Red Mountain, hitting several snowshoers and a woman who was walking her dog in the area.
