Santa rides in a red “sleigh” no matter where he travels, as dozens of Renton children in an adopt-a-family program discovered this week.
Not long after these kids posted wish lists to Santa, he arrived on big, red fire truck with wrapped toys in hand.
The Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department is now in its fifth year in partnership with Communities in Schools of Renton for its adopt-a-family program. Each Renton station, in addition to Fire District 20’s Station 22, adopted a family.
The Renton Firefighter Benevolent Association (RFFBA) contributed $250 to each station’s adopted family. Firefighters at those stations also made individual contributions to the program and then shopped for the children’s wish-list toys.
A cadre of firefighters delivered the gifts to seven families Wednesday.
Jolly ‘ol Saint Nick didn’t just give the gift of toys, he also kept an eye out for possible hazards and educational moments.
In one home “Santa” spotted a live Christmas tree placed next to a baseboard heater. In that same residence, firefighters found and fixed non-operational smoke detectors.
