UPDATE: Benjamin Colton Barnes, Ranger's Suspected Killer, Found Dead

Benjamin Colton Barnes, the person of interest, was reportedly found dead on Monday morning.

UPDATE, 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 3:

The 24-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting a Mount Rainier National Park ranger was found dead in the park Monday, wearing just jeans and a T-shirt, according to law enforcement officials.

The body of Benjamin Colton Barnes was spotted by plane partially submerged in Paradise Creek above Narada Falls, the Tacoma News Tribune reported. Pierce County Sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer said officials believe Barnes died of exposure, the paper reported. The Pierce County medical examiner was on the scene inspecting the body. Two firearms were located near the body.

“He appears to have not been the victim of any type of violence other than the weather,” Troyer told KING 5 News. "He put himself into a position where he wasn't going to get out of," said Troyer. "They had containment on both ends of the valley. If he was still moving he wasn't going to get out."

Barnes is , 34, on Sunday after he failed to stop at a tire checkpoint.

In an interview with The Seattle Times, Anderson’s father, the Rev. Paul Kritsch, said that his daughter and her husband, Eric, were happy to be finally working as U.S. park rangers in the same park.

"They had been looking for that for a long time, to be in the same park," Kritsch, of Scotch Plains, N.J., told the Times in a phone interview.

 

UPDATE, 11 a.m. on Jan. 3: King 5 News is reporting that the suspect, 24-year-old Benjamin Colton Barnes was founded dead in a dtich on Monday morning, according to a law enforcement official involved in the search and investigation.

Barnes was a perso of interest in a New Year's day shooting in Skyway that injured four people, and the fatal shooting of Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson later that same day.

KOMO 4 News is reporting the suspect wanted in an early morning shooting in Skyway is now the person of interest in the shooting death of Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson.

According to the King County Sheriffs Office four people were shot at a house party in the 6200 block of S 117th Place just before 3 a.m. New Years Day.

The suspected Skyway shooter who KOMO is identifying is 24-year-old Benjamin Colton Barnes was asked to leave the party earlier after a dispute. The suspect returned later and opened fire injuring four.

KOMO is also reporting Barnes is the person of interest in the shooting death of Ranger Margaret Anderson. The shooting occurred before 10:30 Sunday when another park service employee had unsuccessfully tried to pull the man over during a routine traffic stop. Anderson set up a road block with her vehicle in the middle of the road, said park spokeswoman Lee Taylor. The man pulled up to Anderson about 11 a.m., jumped out, fired and ran off, she said. 

Pierce County Sheriffs Spokesperson Ed Troyer said when authorities arrived they were also shot at, but no one else was hit. About 150 officers, including officials from the Washington State Patrol, U.S. Forest Service and FBI, were on the mountain.  

King County Sheriffs Office responded to the residence after receiving a 911 call and discovered three men and one woman had been shot. Skyway, Renton and Tukwila fire departments responded along with King County Medic One to treated those with injuries.

Sheriffs Office advised the victims, all in their 20s, were transported to Harborview Hospital. Two are reported to be in critical condition.
