Renton's Ladder 11 Assists With Devasating Apartment Fire In South Park

Two apartment residents were rushed to Harborview Medical Center for burns.

Firefighters personnel from Renton and Skyway responded this afternoon to a massive three-alarm fire in the South Park area of King County. North Highline Fire arrived first within six minutes of the first 911 call and reported the four-story apartment fully engulfed.

Firefighters were able to rescue a person who was wheelchair bound and unable to get out before the fire consumed the entire area. Two people were rushed to Harborview Medical Center’s Burn Unit for burns as a result of the fire. They are listed in satisfactory condition.

Renton Fire responded with Ladder 11 and Battalion 12; Skyway responded with Public Information Officer 21. Ladder 11 provided key water attack from their aerial; while Battalion 12 assisted with operations support.  Dave Nelson, Skyway Fire's Public Information Officer, was the lead incident spokesperson.

All of the 39 tenants of the Lighthouse Apartments have been accounted for and are being assisted by the Seattle Chapter of the American Red Cross. The apartments are owned by the Union Gospel Mission. Firefighters will remained on scene overnight for any hot spots. There were no injuries to firefighter personnel.

The King County Sheriffs Office Fire Investigation unit has begun their investigation into the cause of the fire. Due to the building’s structural weakness, they will wait a day or two until the building is safe.

At the height of the fire 60 firefighters battled the blaze. Units from North Highline Fire, Tukwila Fire, Seatac Fire, Burien/Normandy Park Fire, South King Fire and Rescue, Kent Fire Authority, Renton Fire, Skyway Fire, Seattle Fire, King County Medic One, King County Sheriffs Office and Seattle Police responded.
