Renton Duo Crash Into Riviera Apartments Following Maple Valley Highway Car Chase

A Renton K-9 Unit caught a 21-year-old Renton woman, and King County Sheriff's Deputies apprehended a 37-year-old Renton man who attempted to elude police early this morning.

A Renton couple led Sheriff’s Deputies on a brief chase this morning before crashing into the administration building at Riviera Apartments on Maple Valley Highway.

The chase began after police received a complaint of suspicious activity in the 26300 block of S.E. 242nd Street in Maple Valley, said King County Sheriff's Spokesperson Sgt. Cindi West.

Officers responded to find a man and a woman stripping a car. They briefly eluded police until another officer spotted the older-model gold Honda near 244th and Maple Valley Highway.

A chase ensued down the highway toward Interstate 405 until the Honda veered off the road through the parking lot of a mini-mart store, over a retaining wall and into the parking lot of the Riviera Apartments.

Police caught up with the Honda in the apartment parking lot and executed a “PIT” maneuver to stall the car in hopes of ending the chase.

The maneuver caused the Honda to spin out before it accelerated into the Riviera administration building.

The man driving the car was able to bail out of the Honda before it rammed through the building’s glass doors. The woman passenger injured herself while unsuccessfully attempting to exit the car before the crash. Her injuried didn’t stop her from fleeing the scene. A Renton K-9 unit quickly apprehended the woman.

King County Sheriffs Officers caught up with the man who fled into the Cedar River. The man was cold, but otherwise uninjured.

Deputies found “quite a bit of possibly stolen property” inside the Honda, said West.

Police have not released the name of the 37-year old man or 21-year-old woman, both of Renton, but confirmed the couple are “well known” to law enforcement.
