"Mechanical Failure" Caused an Early Morning Renton House Fire

The blaze caused an estimated $200,000 in damage to the Renton Highlands home.

The "Mechanical failure" of a clothes dryer vent caused an at a Renton Highlands on Monday, according to Renton Fire Investigators. The blaze caused an estimated $200,000 in damage to the home.

Renton Fire and Emergency Services responded to the blaze while the Renton Police Department controlled traffic.

The fire spread to the attic, and flames shot from the roof.

Several additions to the World War II-era home made the fire difficult to control because there were voids in the roof that made the fire difficult for firefighters to access, said Deputy Fire Chief Bill Flora.

Although the house was occupied when the fire began, everyone was able to get outside before the fire department arrived, Flora said.

The fire department contacted the Red Cross to help the displaced family, he said.

Katherine Boury, a Red Cross spokesperson, said that the Red Cross assists fire victims almost every other day.
