UPDATE: Medical Examiner Names Man Found Dead In South Renton

The King County Medical Examiner ruled the death a suicide.

Update—Saturday, Dec. 8:

The King County Medical Examiner has named the man as 63-year-old Lane Hartvigson of Renton. He was discovered lying in the middle of the road in the 1400 block of Harrington Avenue S.E. with a rifle nearby and a gunshot wound to the head. The Medical Examiner confirmed that Hartvigson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Renton police are investigating the apparent suicide of a man found holding a rifle and lying in the middle of a street in south Renton.

At about 10:20 a.m. Thursday, police received a 911 call from someone who had seen a body lying in the street in the 1400 block of Harrington Avenue S.E., according to a statement from Detective Robert Onishi.

The caller told dispatchers that the person had a rifle, and noted that there were obvious injuries and a large amount of blood visible. Officers found the man lying in the middle of the road, with "injuries consistent with a short range gunshot, and initial indications are that the shooting was self-inflicted," the statement said. 

The King County Medical Examiner has been notified and will determine cause and manner of death, as well as identify the person.
