Kennydale Explosion a Mystery, Renton Fire Department Says

Renton firefighters searched for the source of a loud blast that rocked the neighborhood, but could not locate it Friday night, Aug. 9

Renton firefighters responded Friday night, Aug. 9, to reports of a large explosion in the Kennydale area, near Devil's Elbow greenbelt, but could not locate the source of the explosion.

At about 9:49 p.m. Friday, crews from Renton Fire Station No. 12 and No. 11 responded to calls from the  2600 block of Ferndale Ct. NE, Acting Battalion Chief Kevin Anderson said.

Crews could smell a "sulfur-like" smell and searched the area, which is inaccessible by car, but ultimately did not find the source of the explosion sound neighbors in the area heard. Anderson said that given that there was no associated fire located, the department will not likely investigate further, so the source of the blast will likely remain a mystery.

The sound jarred neighbors. Heather Nasarow wrote on Renton Patch's Facebook Page this morning: "Holy cow, from what we think it came from the green belt by Devil's Elbow but it sounded like it could have been in our back yard."

Renton City Councilman Randy Corman said on his Facebook Page that the explosion "rattled the windows" at his Highlands home. Corman asked anyone who with information to notify Renton Police.

Renton Police officials have not yet responded for requests regarding any possible police investigation.
