Fire Chiefs Roll with STP Riders

Three local firefighters biked 204 miles from Seattle to Portland while providing medical support for thousands of cyclists.

Three area firefighters were on hand to provide medical support for the Seattle To Portland bike ride on July 10. Renton fire battalion chiefs Roy Gunsolus and Stan Engler were joined by Capt. Mike Read from Snohomish County Fire District #1.

Engler said the men, who rode the entire 204 miles in twelve hours, saw relatively very few problems or medical emergencies. Engler has biked the STP twelve times, is the third time with Gunsolus, and this is the first time the three have ridden together.

The event, which draws as many as 10,000 cyclists, is the Northwest's largest—and longest. Cyclists complete the course in one or two days.
