Extra Patrols Targeting Drivers Who Text, Talk on Cell Phones

Police will be looking for distracted drivers throughout King County Aug. 5 to Aug. 23.

A special distracted driving patrol began Monday in King County and will continue through Aug. 23.

The effort includes the Washington State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies. In addition to texting and talking, police say they will also be looking for other distracted driving behavior, such as reading and eating.

Research from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission shows 20 percent of all traffic fatalities in King County from 2009 to 2012 involved distracted driving, according to a news release from the state patrol. WSP also cited a University of Utah study that found drivers who text are six times more likely to be involved in a collision than drunk drivers.

State law prohibits drivers from texting or talking on their phones without the use of a hands-free device. Violations carry a penalty of $124, which may be increased in the event of a collision.
