Driver Rams Renton Police Car, Officer Sent to Hospital

An officer was injured last night after he was intentionally hit by an oncoming car while stopped at the intersection of Edmonds Ave. NE at Sunset Boulevard NE.

An officer driving a fully-marked patrol car was intentionally hit by another driver while he waited for the light to change at a stoplight last night, according to the Renton Police Department.

The 36-year-old Renton PD officer was transported to Valley Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries to his head, shoulder and back. The suspect driver was arrested for assault with a vehicle and was uninjured. It's unclear at this time whether drugs and alcohol played a role.

It happened at 8 p.m. on Aug. 24, while the officer waited at a stoplight behind another vehicle at the intersection of Edmonds Ave NE at Sunset Blvd NE. As he and the other car waited for the traffic signal to turn green, a Chevy Avalanche pick-up, driven by the 38-year-old male suspect, was traveling down Sunset Boulevard NE and turned right onto Edmonds Ave. NE. The driver intentionally struck the stopped police car.
