There Must Be 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover

“I'd like to help you in your struggle/ To be free/ There must be fifty ways….”

For the last several weeks, I have read of nine types of suffering and seven possibilities to create relief. The funny thing, though, just like trying to leave a lover, practicing to leave suffering is easier in thought than action.

Pain, depression, anger, sickness are uncomfortable, but they are known and familiar. Taking the action to alleviate them can be even more uncomfortable; doing so requires constancy and the willingness to move into an unknown. Many times our disinclination to action or labor is a well-intentioned way of protecting our self from uncertainty. If not this, then what?”

Let the new action replace the old. Practice until one day you suddenly realize you haven’t felt pain or depression, gotten angry or sick as you usually do. Become the person you didn’t know you are.
