Cut Down the Amount of Junk Mail You Receive

Paper junk mail is still a problem for many of us. But don't despair. King County recently introduced a free online opt-out service that will help Renton-area residents reduce their junk mail.

Remember back when everyone thought we would become a paperless society? Hah! Tell that to your mailbox.

Paper junk mail is still a pervasive problem for many of us, not to mention those darn phone books that suddenly appear on our front porch. But don’t despair. King County recently introduced a free online opt-out service that will help Renton-area residents reduce their junk mail and unwanted phone books.

The King County EcoConsumer program has joined forces with non-profit Catalog Choice to provide a convenient website, http://kingcounty.catalogchoice.org, where residents and businesses can opt out of more than 4,000 different catalogs, coupons, credit offers, circulars, newsletters, other unwanted mailings and phone books. This service is prominently featured on the EcoConsumer website at www.KCecoconsumer.com.

King County is providing this service because even though it’s great to recycle our waste paper, reducing waste at the source is even better.

Even if someone doesn’t live in King County (your Mom in Ohio for example, buried under junk mail), they can still sign up through this website and be part of the Catalog Choice program.

Because of the costs involved in providing this service other ways, this program is only available online. If you do not have a computer at home, you can get on the Internet at the library and sign up, or ask someone with a computer to help you sign up.

This service won’t eliminate all your unwanted mail. Political mailings, for example, are considered protected speech and you can’t opt out from those. And some companies and organizations still do not honor opt-out requests, although King County and Catalog Choice are trying to put pressure on those mailers.

But at least this is a step in the right direction. Sign up for this new free opt-out service, and take control of your mailbox!
