Renton, WA.  March 27, 2014:  Liberty High School’s award-winning Patriot Players continue their 36th season with Once Upon a Mattress, a comic re-telling of The Princess and the Pea fairy tale. This light-hearted musical is filled with catchy songs, fast-paced dance numbers, romance and surprises from the not-so-typical royalty. “It’s really fun to be a mouse-like, dancing, woman-chasing king,” says senior Marcus Milyko, of his role as the mute King Sextimus. And instead of prim and proper, Princess Winnifred is strong, vivacious, and, to the dismay of Queen Aggravain (played by senior Hailey Gumm), a moat-swimmer. “I like that [my character] Winnifred isn’t afraid to be herself,” says senior Olivia George. “She can get down and dirty, wrestle around, be as unladylike as possible and still blush when it comes to a boy complimenting her.” That boy is Prince Dauntless the Drab (a role being shared by juniors Lorrin Hunt and Jason Jarman), whose domineering queen mother will do anything to keep him from marrying. The entire kingdom is distressed, since no one may wed until the prince finds a bride. Senior Eric Spradling-Reim received Honorable Mention in The Fifth Avenue Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role as the Scarecrow in last year’s The Wizard of Oz musical. He returns to the Liberty stage this Spring as the Minstrel, and together with the Jester, are among those coming to Princess “Fred’s” aid as she prepares for the queen’s test.

“I love to be in our shows, half for the acting with friends, and half to see the insane sets and costumes the volunteers and parents pull off!” says senior Maddy Daly, last year’s Dorothy, who plays the Jester this year.

The directors, cast, staff members and volunteers have been working nonstop since January to produce another high-caliber musical. “Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Klekas and Katy Tabb are phenomenal,” says Hailey Gumm of this year’s vocal director, director, and choreographer. “The show is awesome and I’m so excited to show others all the hard work the entire cast has put into Once Upon a Mattress!”
