Renton Western Wear Will Close After 62+ Years Downtown

What does the closure of Renton Western Wear mean to you, and what does it mean for Downtown Renton?

One of Downtown Renton's longest-running businesses will soon shutter it's doors. Brightpink and green posterboards covered Renton Western Wear's windows late Thursday night in preparation for the store's final sale, February 8.

Often described as an "anchor tenant" by other longtime busiess owners, Patch wants to know how you'd describe Renton Western Wear. What does it's closure mean to you, and what does it mean for Downtown Renton?

Here's a copy of the letter posted to the storefront's window and on the Renton Western Wear web site:

The closure of the store means nothing to me personally because I have never shopped there, but it saddens me because of the affect it will have on downtown Renton. It's ironic that a significant downtown business closes at a time when there is much talk about trying to re-vitalize downtown. The immediate effects of the closure will be one less reason for people to go downtown, and an empty store on South Third Street, neither of which is desirable. I don't know how the closure affects the City's tax base. Let's hope that another use can be found for the building. Perhaps another business in Renton would like to move downtown. Are there any City services that have outgrown City Hall and need a new home?

Ever since I moved to Renton this has been a staple of my downtown shopping experience. The sales staff has always been incredibly helpful and friendly. I love stores like this - cozy, with great well made products, focused on "basics" and an unusual niche market like western wear -- something most larger chains and departments stores wouldn't bother with. You pay a few dollars more - but the service, expertise and convenience of having an in-person experience (as opposed to online) more than makes up for a cheaper price and less personal experience down the road. I'll miss the friendly folks who work there and being able to wander through the store and search the racks to see what is new or different from time to time. Goodbye Renton Western Wear! I'm glad I got to know you as long as I did.

Really sad to see Renton Western Wear close. They're a Renton Icon and I've been going there since I was a small kid. Bought my first official cowboy hat and western shirt there back in 1969! Thanks RWW for many years of great service and best wishes on your next endeavors.
