Patch Picks for Breakfast & Brunch

In Renton and nearby Columbia City there are plenty of options for a morning out on the town.

  1. Geraldine’s Counter, in Columbia City was highly recommended by a professional chef friend, and I see why. Geraldine’s takes breakfast and kicks it up a notch. Sure they have eggs, sausage, and hash browns, and the usual suspects, but their creative approach to breakfast is what makes them superior, and continues to draw a loyal following. Scrambled eggs aren’t just scrambled eggs here. You can get them with sweet white corn, havarti cheese, and fresh herbs. If that’s not your thing—how about a Mexican take on breakfast? Have your eggs scrambled with chiles, pepperjack cheese, black beans and served with tortillas. And, forget those greasy egg sandwich’s popular at restaurant chains. Try the Bacon, Egg and Arugula sandwich with aioli. There are a lot of sides (chicken or pork sausage) and other items to choose from. I'm just teasing you to make you hungry.
  2. . I hadn’t been here in a while, and because my usual local spot was closed for construction, I decided to try them again. I’m so glad that I did. The service was great—and accommodating. Even though we came in about three minutes before the lunch service was supposed to start, they kindly offered to serve us the breakfast we were craving. My husband raved about the French toast made with cinnamon bread, served with warm syrup and fresh blueberries (you can also choose strawberries or bananas). I opted for the huevos rancheros and fresh fruit. It was served with warm tortillas, salsa, and black beans. It was just the ticket on a blustery morning. You might also choose from the build your own omelet selection, chicken fried steak, or eggs benedict. If you are having a leisurely breakfast, start with one of their tasty bloody marys or a mimosa. If you are up to it, work the breakfast off by hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range.
  3. Local hangout, Apogee Pub & Restaurant, in Fairwood, is like an old friend. Consistent, reliable, and always there when you need them. The prices are ridiculously cheap, the coffee is good, and the service is friendly. There are no real surprises on the menu, but they do have daily specials that change this up a notch. The portions are huge, so a favorite of mine is the petite breakfast, which is great for a small portion eater like me. (Hash browns in a normal portion fill the entire plate). The biscuits and gravy are there if you are craving what your grandma used to make.
  4. The Whistlestop Ale House serves breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon, but I wish they served it a little longer, particularly on Sunday’s when church doesn’t end until noon. They offer the usual eggs, toast, and hashbrowns, but also some creative options as well. The "train wreck" is a unique blend of chorizo sausage, red potatoes, onions and garlic—served with three eggs and topped with salsa. Or, my favorite is a “Greek” approach to breakfast. It’s scrambled eggs with spinach and feta cheese. They often offer a homemade quiche special served with fresh fruit when you want a lighter breakfast.
  5. The blends American and Asian cuisines in their unique menu. If you want to try something different in blending the two cuisines, you might select the prawn omelet. If that’s a bit too exotic for your taste, they offer plenty of other choices in omelets, including your usual Denver, or meat lover’s Joe’s Special that includes ground beef and mushrooms. The corned beef hash is outstanding and fills the plate. My husband and I have shared one and still taken home leftovers. (But as mentioned previously, I’m a light eater, so take it for what it’s worth on the portion sizes). They also offer a large selection of pancakes and French toast options, and have a senior menu.
