More Boeing Layoffs: 100 Local Engineers Reportedly Getting Notices

The Everett Herald reports that completion of non-recurring development work on the 787 and KC-46 tanker means the company must cut its engineering workforce by 1,500, including 100 jobs in the Puget Sound region.

Boeing has announced another round of layoffs, with some 100 manufacturing engineers in the Puget Sound region to receive notice by Friday, the Everett Herald reports.

Last month Boeing announced that some 800 machinists would be laid off by the end of the year. Β

In an email sent Thursday, Mike Delaney, vice president of engineering for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said the company plans to reduce its engineering workforce by 1,500-1,700 by the end of the year, with as many as 700 engineers facing layoffs -- 100 locally.

"Unfortunately and unavoidably we must take additional actions that will impact some direct employees," he wrote.

The Herald reported that the email said the layoffs were due to completion of non-recurring development work on the 787-8, 787-9 as well as the KC-46A tanker. Potential development projects on the Dreamliner that might have eliminated the need for the cuts has not been approved.
